Diaries, 1866-1879.

The journals record life in Dakota Territory, the duties of an Indian agent, the business transactions and relations with the reservation trader, E. E. Hudson, the arrivals and departures of steamers on the Missouri, the troops in the Black Hills, Custer's defeat, family and personal affairs, and the seizure of the reservation by Lt. Dougherty and Livingston's subsequent trial.

Dr. Henry Farrand Livingston (1843-1913), went to Dakota in 1865 from Davenport, Iowa, and settled in Yankton. He was surgeon at the Crow Creek Agency from 1867 to 1870 when he became the Indian Agent there. In 1878 a squad of United States Soldiers siezed the agency and arrested Livingston. Hammond was an officer in the Union army during the Civil War. After the war he worked for the railroads and as Superintendent of Indian Affairs in the Dakota Territory.
